All in Home Plan
[Opinion]
Digicel Fiji recently announced its “All in Home Plan” which consists of 25 FREE Channels for Sky Pacific, 500GB Unwired data and 40GB Digicel mobile data. The 500GB Unwired data is divided as 200GB anytime data, 100GB Netflix, 100 GB night data and 100GB gaming. For Unwired night time data is activated for browsing between 1am and 6am. The condition for the gaming data is that this is only free when playing 3 games: PUBG, Fortnite and Call of Duty- modern warfare; additional charges applying for if downloading.
While there are no stats provided for how many customers have signed up for this package, there has been a significant drop in connectivity when browsing between 5pm and 8:30pm. Flashback to late last year when a Fortnite game update brought down the entire network of one of Fiji’s biggest ISPs.
It is encouraging to see that our internet providers can now offer more bandwidth to its customers, a few nagging points stand out loud in the background:
- some of us actually need to stay online in the evenings without having to restart the modem several times.
- what does one do with 500GB of data when average monthly usage does not reach 100GB.
- 3 games is a bit much, also noting that the games offered are for teenagers and adults i.e. for mature audiences has violence and vulgarities
- taking into consideration the context of when this package is being offered; in the middle of a global pandemic when more than 45% of the fijian economy is sitting unemployed because of the halt in flights thereby a halt in Tourism and instead of offering some sort of assistance, customers are being asked to pay extra to purchase this deal or an additional $15 for monthly subscriptions.
